gun safety. we have had majorities and two polls, cbs, "the washington post"/abc saying we need stricter laws, stricter earn forcement, and that's -- that's pretty big shift. as you know, opinion had been shifting away toward more people having guns and the whole idea of a way to solve this problem, if everybody has a gun you can stop the shooter. of course that doubles down on the problem and we have a culture in which guns are more available to young people and that approach. >> the president can't do it alone. he needs cooperation of congress. three basic principles should guide our gun policies. first you have to -- must have a license to own a gun. the license should not be easy to get. so how difficult should it be what would be your parameters? >> i think the permit system now is full of holes. it's determined at the state level. we have very uneven laws. as you know, suzanne, you can -- the permit system as a background check, a waiting peer, that's all very helpful. it done get into whether you know how to use a gun. the kinds of things we do to license people to drive.

. >>> 14 days now. 14 days until we hit the fiscal cliff. we have a friend freenzy of mov washington. let me just do a quick reset here so we can all understand where we stand. so this time yesterday we were reporting a major concession on the part of house speaker john boehner. his very first offer of higher tax rates, higher rates for anyone making more than a million bucks a year. well, quick as a whip here, the president gave some as well. he moved his bar for the tax hike from incomes starting at a quarter million dollars, that with a his earlier stance, to incomes beginning a bit higher at $400,000 a year. the president also offering significant spending cuts, including cuts in social security payments to better off seniors, plus a promise of health savings further down the road. i know, i know it is a lot to follow. bottom line, though, things seem to be moving along, perhaps in the right direction. but then boehner tossed a curveball here. for that, let's go to senior congressional correspondent dana bash who will walk me through this here. let's hold off if you would on the boehn

and former fbi director tom fuentes joins us from washington. deborah feyerick is joining us. tom, first you to. these are high-powered guns the there. you obviously downtown wan't wan the wrong hands. connecticut has strong laws on the books now. how did the young adam lanza, 20-year-old, get these weapons? >> hi, wolf. so far we don't know for sure how he got them. the reports are that his manager legally purchased the weapons and legally had them in the house, it followed all of the laws of connecticut. but if he went ahead and stole them from his mother and then actually used them against her and the other children, then that's where the problem comes in. she may have obtained the guns legally, but he didn't. he basically would have stolen the weapons. >> how popular out there are these three kinds of weapons? the two pistols, one rifle? how popular out there are they generally across the country? >> they're popular because the glock and the sig sauer pistols are professional, top-of-the-line quality. they're carried by most law enforcement officers, federal, state, and local throughout

supervised the atf's response a decade ago, a story i covered a lot, the washington, d.c. beltway sniper. so unfortunately, this is something you know a lot about. i want you to walk me through some of these weapons. in the press conference, the medical examiner said that everybody was shot with the same rifle. which would be i guess the bushmaster. so give us some more information about the bushmaster . 223 semiautomatic rifle. that certainly changes the facts in this case. obviously, the bushmaster is typically used in a longer-range shooting. it has more accuracy from a distance. it's odd that he would take the long gun into the school, because he could do just as much damage with the pistols. the one advantage with the rifle is typically you can load 30-round magazines typically during some of these tactical situations. they'll stack the two magazines, one upside down, finish shooting 30 rounds, push a button, flip the other one over as quickly as you can turn it, and now you have another 30 rounds to shoot. so the tactics -- what's odd with this whole thing that i find odd, we've heard
